Trams in München - 2009 Replacement services

Posted on August 24, 2009

For many years, track replacement work as well as other construction work involving Munich’s trams has been carried out during the school holidays, with major works generally being programmed during the six-week school summer holiday ‘envelope’. This is a period when there are usually less people using the system, therefore causing less inconvenience.

R2.2 Tram 2105 at U-Bhf Silberhornstraße on replacement route 35 (St-Veit-Straße - Grünwald)

Track replacement work obviously requires sections of route to be completely withdrawn, usually causing two normally unconnected branches of particular routes to be joined together, in order for the service to flow reasonably normally, as well as enabling staff and vehicles to be allocated economically. Since 2005 these routes have been allocated their own special batch of numbers in the 30+ block. This renumbering is intended to give passengers clear and logical information ‘at-a-glance‘ and although it’s usefulness has been disputed among some tram enthusiasts. After much observation, I am convinced that this system has proved itself to be practical and worthwhile for both the MVG as well as for it’s passengers.

Replacement routes in 2009

This year there have been to three periods of construction work which have caused replacement services to be introduced:

3 April until 19 April 2009 and again between 29 May until 14 June 2009
Replacement of track on Barer Straße between Karlsplatz(Stachus) and Kurfürstenplatz

  • Tram 32 U-Bhf Petuelring - U-Bhf Scheidplatz (replacement for sections of Tram 12 & 27)
  • Tram 36 Amalienburgstraße - Schwanseestraße (replacement for sections of Tram 16 & 27)

MVG R2.2 2168

R2.2 2168 at Scheidplatz - This was the first time that the route number 32 had been used on a replacement route.

This was also the first time since August 1943, that the route number 32 had been used on a tram service in Munich.

MVG P3.16 2021

P3.16 2021 at Sendlinger Tor en route to Romanplatz on route 36.This was also the first time that the route number 36 had been used on a replacement route.

The route number 36 had been used for over thirty years on a bus service in northern Munich, but this was the first time since August 1920, that this route number had been used on a tram service.

3 August until 14 September 2009
Replacement of track on Isartorplatz, Max-Weber-Platz and Karlsplatz(Stachus)

  • Tram 35 St-Veit-Straße - Grünwald (replacement for sections of Tram 15, 25 & 19)
  • Tram 37 Amalienburgstraße - Gondrellplatz (replacement for sections of Tram 16, 17 & 18)
  • Tram 39 Pasing - Effnerplatz (replacement for sections of Tram 17 & 19)

R3.3 2204

R3.3 2204 at U-Bhf Silberhornstraße - The first time the route number 35 has been used on a replacement service.

A Route 35 was last seen as a tram service as far back as October 1913 on a Neuhausen - Sendlinger Tor - Grünwald route.

R2.2 2131

R2.2 2131 on Landsberger Straße on route 37 Gondrellplatz - Amalienburgstraße. This replacement route also saw service in 2006 and 2008.

R2.2 2106

R.2.2 2106 at Hauptbahnhof Süd en route to Pasing

R2.2 2125

R2.2 2125 at Hauptbahnhof Süd. This is the third incarnation of a Route 39 since 2005. The western terminus has stabilised at Pasing, but the eastern terminus has varied from Effnerplatz via Max-Weber-Platz in 2005, Schwanseestraße in 2006, to this year’s Effnerplatz via Maxmonument terminus.

Most of the available route numbers in the 30+ block have now been used, in fact only 33 and 34 still haven’t. Route 33 has never been used on a tram, in fact the only number under 40 never to have done so, although there was a ‘bus’ 33 in Munich from 1970 until 2005.

  • Tram 30 - 2006
  • Tram 31 - 2005
  • Tram 32 - 2009
  • Tram 33 - not yet used
  • Tram 34 - not yet used
  • Tram 35 - 2009
  • Tram 36 - 2009
  • Tram 37 - 2006, 2008, 2009
  • Tram 38 - 2007
  • Tram 39 - 2005, 2006, 2009
