Around and About Berlin - Turmstraße gets a Tower

Turmstraße in Berlin-Moabit has been known as such since 1827 and was reputedly given this name because on a clear day, a tower could be seen at both ends of it. The area had been in decline for years and was defined a regeneration area by the Berlin Senate. The area south of Turmstraße towards the [...]

Out of Berlin - Hamburg

I was in Hamburg last weekend. I thought I’d post a couple of photos of my visit. With a high quality system of RE and S-Bahn trains, U-Bahn and bus services, Hamburg can be proud of it’s transport system, which was I think the first system to join up as a combine in 1967. The [...]

Happy 719th Birthday Switzerland

Today is the Swiss National Day, the 719th Anniversary (at least Legend has it) of the swearing of an oath of co-operation and assistance by Werner Stauffacher, Walter Fürst und Arnold von Melchtal by the Cantons of Uri, Schwyz und Unterwalden, which became the foundation of the Swiss Confederation.

Earlier this week I noticed that a [...]

Out of Berlin - Two days in Stuttgart

I was in Stuttgart for a couple of day this week. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I didn’t have much time to be able to get all the photos that I wanted. Friends often find it amusing that I refer to Stuttgart as Germany’s San Francisco. But I do think the comparison is justified. I [...]

Around and About - F10 Wannsee - Kladow

On a hot and sunny afternoon last week, I took a trip on the F10 from Wannsee to Kladow. The F10 is one of six ferry services worked on behalf of the BVG and can be used by holders of regular VBB tickets. This facility has made the F10 popular with the Berliners for many [...]

Around and About Berlin - ‘Taurus’ on the Berlin-Warsaw Express

I recently noticed that Polish State Railways Siemens ‘Taurus’ locomotives have now taken over the duties on the Berlin-Warsaw Express railway service. This has, at last, brought some class to this service, which although it is a European Capitals service, never gave the feeling that it was a priority higher class service, much more a [...]

Around and About Berlin - Advertising in the U-Bahn

About a year ago, the BVG started what I think was the first of a series of Advertising campaigns, in which a complete underground station was ‘branded’ to advertise one product. The BVG hoped in this way to increase revenue in advertising on the U-Bahn, which in recent years had drastically decreased, not in only [...]

Out of Berlin - Friday Afternoon in Frankfurt/M

Last week I was on business in Frankfurt/Main. While waiting for my train back to Berlin, I was able to get a couple of shots of this SNCF TGV.

TGV 384 024 waiting to depart with TGV 9552, the 16:57 to Paris Est.

Unmistakenly Frankfurt am Main.
SNCF and DB jointly operate the service from Frankfurt/M to Paris [...]

Twenty Years Ago - 1 July 1990

Twenty years ago, at Midnight on 1st July 1990, the first stage of German Re-unification swung into action and with it the Deutsche Mark or DM became legal tender in The German Democratic Republic. At the same time, the Mark der DDR lost it’s validity. Things hadn’t been planned to happen this way, but the [...]

Germany in the FIFA World Cup 2010

Berlin, as Germany’s capital has seen some parties after Germany’s games. With each game the excitement (and the crowds) grow. But, will this continue like the wonderful weather we’ve been experiencing? Or will it all end in a bad thunder storm? We’ll have to see…

The story so far:

 13 June, Durban Germany 4 - [...]

New Tracks over old - München Tram 23

Munich’s newest tram route, the 23, commenced operation on 13 December 2009. It brings back trams to the Schwabing area of the city and is the first tram in the ‘North of Munich’ since route 13 was withdrawn in 1993.

On 12 September 1993 Christian Ude (SPD) had been elected as “Oberbürgermeister” and this appointment [...]

75 Years Ago - Friedrichstraße 1935

In the summer of 1935, a young married couple from Augsburg in Bavaria spent a few days in Berlin. The photographs recording that visit are now in my collection. One of these is titled “Vor dem Automatencafé 1935” or “In front of the Vending Machine Café 1935″.

The photo shows the young man from Augsburg, although [...]
